Under 16 Boys vs Merseyside - Match Report

Staffordshire Boys Under 16's 3 - 1 Merseyside Boys Under 16's (National Cup Quarter-Final)

A phenomenal team effort from the Staffs boys saw them overcome a strong and physical Merseyside team who had thrashed West Yorkshire 7-1 in the previous round. The reward for the Under 16 Boys is a Home tie in the National Semi-Final against Cleveland (date to be confirmed).

Straight from the first whistle Staffs were pressing the visitors all over the pitch and after an early period of domination deservedly took the lead as James Plant fired home from Sol Ashworth’s free kick. Only a brilliant save by the Merseyside keeper kept out Sol’s next free kick as Staffs went in search of a second goal. Right on half-time the visitors broke away following another Staffs free kick, levelling the scores to make it 1-1 at half-time.

The interval team talk was about everything the boys had done so well during the first half, telling them to keep playing the same way and the result would come. Manager Neil Davies saw the Staffs boys respond brilliantly after half-time, retaking the lead with the goal of the game as Ben Herrington superbly controlled Sol Ashworth’s through ball before slotting home.

Now it was just about controlling the game and dealing with the visitors inevitable physical onslaught. The whole team worked so hard and the defence simply would not let Merseyside through. Man of the Match Jack Bostock seemed to head and kick every ball out of the Staffs box, ably supported by Isaac Turner and the rest of the defence. The crucial third goal for Staffs then killed the game off. The ball fell to Sam Scott following a corner and he carefully side footed it towards goal with James Miller getting a touch on the way through to notch his first County goal. It was then just about game management which the Staffs boys did superbly. Merseyside lost their discipline late on when they realised their fate and resorted to a few wild challenges, but Staffs maintained their composure and were comfortable winners in the end.

Congratulations to every member of the squad, they all played a huge part in a tremendous performance. They are now just one game away from the National final.
